Every Woman A Theologian

Every Woman A Theologian by Phylicia Masonheimer is a Christian theology book published in 2023.

I read this book out of curiosity. I have seen so many people post on social media about it. Everyone seemed to love it. Even though I was pretty sure that I knew most of what was in the book, I decided to read it, too.

In Every Woman Is a Theolgian, Phylicia Masonheimer wants you to know what you believe and why you believe it.

She covers the doctrines of scripture, God, soteriology, ecclesiology, eschatology, and more and explains some of the different views on these things.

I see why Phylicia Massonheimer wrote this book and why so many love it. This book is written for newer Christians, Christians who are unsure of what they believe, or those who have never studied theology.

However, I didn’t love it. I liked it, but I didn’t love it.

Here is why. I am not the core audience for which this book was written.

I have been a Christian for over thirty years. I have been in churches that emphasize theology. I also love to read and study. I personally don’t want a brief chapter on eschatology; I would rather read books on it. In fact, I have. We have quite a few on our bookshelves.

This book is an intro to theology, which is why so many people love it. You will probably enjoy this book if you want brief chapters explaining theology and terms. It will give you a starting point to learn more.

But if you are wanting a deep study, this book isn’t it.

I also don’t love the title of this book. It shouldn’t be Everyone Woman A Theologian, it should be Every Christian Is a Theologian. I wish that would have been the title.

The reality is that many Christians, men and women, lack theology. My guess it that since Phylicia is a woman, she feels she needs to teach women. I get that.

I also know that many churches emphasize theology for men rather than women. I have been in the type of church that does that. So, I agree that every Christian woman needs to know that they believe, but so do Christian men. In many Christian circles, both men and women lack a deep knowledge of what they believe.

I loved the last chapter of the book. She talks about knowing theology but having grace-filled theology.

I loved this quote.

“God is sovereign enough to defend Himself, and He does not need a theological bulldog. He can accomplish more through your educated grace than you can accomplish through unrighteous anger.”

Sadly, I have been in churches where some of the people were theological bulldogs. There was no grace for those that might not believe quite the same as they did.

Again, Phylicia Masonheimer says it well,

“The study of theology equips us to love well. If it doesn’t, it’s not Biblical theology.”

Many people will disagree with this review, but we always give honest reviews. This book will help many people, but if you are a Christian who knows theology and what you believe, this might not be the book for you.
