Book Review of
The Nightingale
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women’s war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France―a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.
Lynn's Review
I really enjoyed The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah. It was a page turner for me that I could not put down. The details and descriptions about the characters and the family dynamics were believable, which is not always the case with historical fiction. It only took me a about two chapters to be totally drawn into this story. Although this was fiction, it felt like it really could have happened.
If you like historical fiction, I think you will enjoy this one. It covers the tragedies of war, so it is a tough read in parts, but overall it is well done in how it covers the real issues that happen during wartime.
I will say that I think parts of the book were probably not as historically accurate as they could have been. This book has a lot of 4 and 5 star reviews on Amazon and Good Reads, but it does have some negative reviews. A lot of the negative reviews have to do with it’s accuracy and how it portrays history and France during WWII. So if you are picky on your historical fiction, you might want to take that into account.
Overall, I think it was a great read, and it will make my list of favorite WWII historical fiction books.
