Have you been wondering this month about what history happened in February?

Back in 2018, we had a weekly feature that we called This Week In History. After about a year, we took a break. It ended up being a longer break than we planned and we took several years off.

We decided it was time to bring it back but in a slightly different way. Instead of a weekly post was are going to share it monthly.

What Happened This Month In History

It might seem a little strange to do a monthly post about what happened in history, but one of the reasons that we read is because we love to learn. We know you love to learn too.

Sharing what happened in history posts helps us learn, or remember, what happened in the past.

Knowing our history is important and we think this is a fun way to share historical facts.

We hope to share these the first week of every month.

This Week In History February

February 1^st

• 1861 Texas seceded from the Union becoming the seventh state to secede.
• 1884 The first volume of the Oxford English Dictionary was published.

February 2^nd

• 1848 The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed by the U.S. and Mexico ending the Mexican-American War.
• 1887 The first Groundhog Day was celebrated in Punxutawney, Pennsylvania.
• 1941 During WWII, The Battle of Stalingrad ended after months of fighting, when German troops surrendered.

February 3^rd

• 1889 Outlaw Belle Starr was killed when shot twice in the back.
• 1912 The Sixteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. It gave Congress the right to impose a Federal income tax.

February 4^th

• 1861 Representatives from six Southern States met in Alabama to form a new Independent government headed by Jefferson Davis.
• 1938 Disney debuted Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

February 5^th

• 1953 Disney’s film Peter Pan debuted.

February 6^th

• 1756 Aaron Burr was born. Aaron Burr was the third U.S. Vice President and the person who killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel.
• 1952 Princess Elizabeth became Queen of the United Kingdom when her father King George VI, died.

February 7^th

• 1804 John Deere, American manufacture of agricultural implements, was born.
• 1812 English author Charles Dickens was born.

February 8^th

• 1587 Mary Queen of Scots was executed.
• 1828 French author of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Jules Verne was born.

February 9^th

• 1773 William Henry Harrison, the ninth U.S. President was born. He served the shortest term of any U.S President when he caught a cold on inauguration day and died thirty days later.

February 10^th

• 1763 The French and Indian War ended.
• 1957 Laura Ingalls Wilder, American author, died. She is known for the her series Little House on the Prairie, based on her life on the American frontier.

February 11^th

• 1847 American inventor, Thomas Edison, was born.
• 1945 President Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin ended their secret meetings to decide boundaries in Europe after the war.

February 12^th

• 1809 President Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth U.S. President, was born.

February 13^th

• 2000 The last original Peanuts comic strip appeared one day after cartoonist Charles M. Schulz died.

February 14^th

• 1779 English explorer and navigator Captain James Cook is killed in Hawaii.
• 1962 Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of President John F. Kennedy, hosted the first televised tour of the White House.

February 15^th

• 1950 The Disney movie Cinderella debuted.

February 16th

• 1862 General Grant captured Fort Donelson during the American Civil War. It was an important Civil War battle and weakened the Confederate forces.

February 17th

• 1963 NBA basketball player Michael Jordan was born.

February 18th

• 2001 Race car driver Dale Earnhardt died in a crash in the Daytona 500.

February 19th

• 1878 Inventor Thomas A. Edison patents the photograph.

February 21st

• 1925 The New Yorker magazine published the first issue.

February 22nd

• 1819 The United States acquires Florida when the Spanish Minister and John Quincy Adams, the U.S. Secretary, signed the Transcontinental Treaty.

February 23th

• 1945 The U.S. flag was raised during the battle of Iwo Jima. The image is one of the most famous images of WWII.
• 1954 The first children in the U.S. receive the polio vaccine.

February 24th

• 1868 U.S. President Andrew Jackson was impeached.

February 25th

• 2004 The movie Passion of the Christ opened in the U.S.

February 27th

• 1902 American author John Steinback was born.

February 28th

• 1932 Ford produced the last Model A. The Model A had a starting price of $460.
