Book Review of
Find Your People
Lynn's Review
Find Your People by Jennie Allen was published in 2022. It is Christian nonfiction.
I am not sure where I first heard about Find Your People, but the tagline is what made me want to read this one. Building Deep Community in a Lonely World.
Building community and real friendships is hard. We all have friends, but do you have real deep true friends? The kind of friends that will drop everything and show up when you need it. The kind of friends that are honest and real with you. The kind of friends who you will let in your house when the laundry is piled high, the kitchen is a mess, and the floors are in need of a good mopping.
Jennie Allen shares her journey of building a community of these types of friends.
She reminds us why we need true, meaningful friendships. She gives suggestions on how to build them and how not to. And this isn’t just a book full of tips. She shares examples of things she had done that have worked and things that haven’t.
Friendships take work. I love this quote from the book. “I want to die working besides people I love with dirt under my fingernails. “ In other words, we want to get dirty and messy with the people we are closest to.
I also loved her reminder on page 177. A key reason for loneliness is that we give up too easily. Friendships take time and a lot of working out. They are not easy. They take work. If we want friends, true friends, it will be work. It will be messy. But it will also be so worth it.
If you are struggling with loneliness, I think this book will be encouraging. Not only will it give you suggestions, but it will also remind you that many people are lonely. And many people long for those deeper true friendships.
