The Cruelest Month by Louise Penny is the third book in Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series. 

I am really enjoying this series, but this was my least favorite of the three that I have read. 

In The Cruelest Month Chief Inspector Gamache is called to Three Pines to investigate a murder that happened during a seance at the Hadley house. Weaved within the story of that murder is a mystery about Gamache’s past. 

Louise Penny is a brilliant mystery writer. The attention to detail, the plot, the characters, etc. are so well done. It wasn’t the writing that I did not like about this one, it was that so much of the story revolved around witches and seances. 

Those are two things I don’t usually read about. Or even watch movies or t.v. shows about. I just don’t enjoy them. If this book had not been part of a series that I loved, I probably would have skipped it.
