Rules of Civility by Amor Towles was published in 2011. It is historical fiction. 

Rules of Civility is set in 1938. in New York. You follow Katey and the people she meets. The book starts on the last day of 1937 and continues through 1938. 

My goal for the year is to read more of the books I own by the authors I have enjoyed previously. Amor Towles fits both those things. 

I read and loved Gentleman In Moscow, but it is the only book by Amor Towles that I have read. This year’s challenge was the perfect time to change that. 

Since the book starts on New Year’s Eve, I thought New Year’s Eve would be the perfect time to start reading it. I finished this book in just a few days, so it was my first fiction read of 2024. 

I love Amor Towles’s writing. In his writing, not much happens, but at the same time, so much happens.  I love how he writes the characters and the place. It brings the period alive. He writes stories so true to human character that they feel like they could have happened. 

There is a storyline with an underlying storyline. It is political, and yet it isn’t political. His books make you think. And I like fiction that does that. 

This book is set in 1938 in New York. It is a party scene. There is a lot of behavior that goes on in this book that I’m afraid I have to disagree with. However, it is human behavior that makes the story read like real life. This book won’t be for everyone, though. It is a PG-13 type of book. 

I can’t wait to read my next Amor Towles book.
