Canary Girls book review

Canary Girls by Jennifer Chiaverini is a WWI historical fiction book that was published in 2023.

Canary Girls was recommended to me by a reader after I shared my list of books set in WWI. I had it in my to be read stack, so I decided it was time to pick it up.

Set in England during WWI, this book is about the women who worked in munition factories during WWI.

While their husband, brothers, and friends were fighting in the war, they went to work in factories to earn money and help win the war.

Those working in the munition factories risked their lives and health to support the war effort. They knew the risk, although maybe not how great it was, but they viewed it as their way to help their loved ones fight on the frontlines.

I had heard of the Canary Girls but knew little about them, so I really enjoyed this book.

I like Jennifer Chiavernini’s writing, but I have mixed thoughts about some of her books. Sometimes, she takes too many liberties with history, and it is hard to tell what is fact and fiction.

However, I enjoyed this book. I think I enjoy her newer books better than her older ones. Her newer books have great author notes, so it is easier to tell what is fact and what is fiction.

If you like Jennifer Chiaverini’s books or are looking to read a WWI historical fiction book, you will probably enjoy this one.
