Lynn's Review
Flygirl by Sherri L. Smith is a young adult historical fiction book published in 2009.
I came across this book when looking for some YA historical fiction. Since I love WWII historical fiction, I decided to give it a try. I am glad that I did.
Ida Mae wants to be a pilot, but as a black girl in 1940s Louisanna, that seems impossible. However, her light skin helped her to pass as a white person, and she joined the Women Airforce Service Pilots during WWII.
I have not read much about the WASPs, so I enjoyed learning more about them.
This book is not based on a specific person but on the WASPs and events that happened during WWII.
This is a YA book, but I think both young adults and adults will enjoy this one.
