A Holiday By Gaslight

Holiday By Gaslight by Mimi Matthews is a holiday romance published in 2018.

This book sounded like a fun Christmas read. I got this book ebook for just a couple of dollars, so I decided to give it a try.

Sophie is willing to marry beneath her class, but she is not sure she wants to marry London merchant Edward Sharpe.

Her dad has spent her dowry on things like adding gas lighting to their country estate. He seems to think improvements on their home are more important than his daughters.

Sophie wants to love the man she is going to marry, but she also needs to save her family from ruin.

This book is a take on Elizabeth Glaskells North and South. A lower class merchant falls in love with a women from the upper class.

This was a quick read. It’s more of a novella than a book. But I didn’t really like it.

Holiday romance books are often unrealistic, but this one seemed over the top.

I also think I didn’t love it because I love North and South and this did not even come close to being the same. North and South had depth to the story and the characters.

This book did not.

It also felt like a few things in the book didn’t fit, like the references to Charles Darwin and his book. I get that his book was written during the time period the book takes place, but the way the author put it in the story just didn’t make sense to me.

So, this book isn’t one I would recommend.
