Book Review of
Housekeeping
Lynn's Review
Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson was published in 1980. It is considered literary fiction.
I have wanted to read a Marilynne Robinson book for a long time. I finally decided it was time to read one of her books. I own the book Housekeeping, so I decided to start with it.
The book is set in a small town in the west called Fingerbone. It is about two girls who are raised primarily by their grandmother, great-aunts, and aunt.
I can see why people love Marilynne Robinson’s writing, but I struggled with this book. I finished it because it is considered a classic, and I wanted to say I finished a Marilynn Robison book, but I did not enjoy it.
This book was a bit dark and depressing for me. I don’t mind reading books that are like real life. Tough things happen in real life, but I like having at least one character in a book. I struggled to like any of the main characters in this book. They made poor decisions, and they paid the price for those decisions.
I have heard others say that this isn’t their favorite Marilynne Robinson book, so I will probably try one of her other books at some point.
