Book Review of
Luck of the Titanic
Lynn's Review
Luck of the Titanic by Stacey Lee was published in 2021. It is YA historical fiction.
Valor Luck is in search of her brother and a better life in America, but will she find it on the Titanic?
Valor Luck and her brother were raised in England by a British mother and a Chinese father. After the death of her parents, Valor longs for a new life working with her brother as a circus performer However, that is her wish, not his.
This is the third book by Stacey Lee that I have read. I do not read a lot of YA books, but there are a few authors that write YA historical fiction that I enjoy. Stacey Lee is one of them.
I liked this book, but I didn’t love it. It is my least favorite of the three books by Stacey Lee that I have read. The main reason that I did not like it was that it felt very much like a young adult book.
Yes, I know it is YA, so it should feel like YA, but the other two books felt very much like books that both YA and adults could enjoy. Luck of the Titanic felt more like a definite YA book to me.
One of the reasons that I felt this way is that it felt unrealistic in many ways, but young adults like adventure and excitement, even if it is unrealistic.
I do appreciate what Stacey Lee is trying to do in educating and honoring the Chinese people that came to America in search of a better life. Very few people and authors focus on Chinese immigrants and how they were treated. In her books, Stacey Lee is helping to tell their story, and for that reason, I think her books are worth reading.
