Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan was published in 2021. It is literary fiction, but it is also Christmas fiction because it is set at Christmas.

Small Things Like These is set in a small Irish town in 1985, during the weeks before Christmas. This is a Christmas book, but it is not a Hallmark movie-type Christmas book. I would say that it is the opposite of a Hallmark Christmas movie. If you love your books wrapped up neatly, this is not the book for you. 

I had heard quite a few people talk about this book, but I really knew nothing about it except that it was a Christmas book. 

This book is about a coal merchant who, during his busiest season, makes a discovery at a local convent.

It is a short book but packs a lot into its pages. This book was about a time in Irish history that I knew little about.

I love books like this that challenge me and make me think about things I have not thought about before.
