Book Review of
Somewhere Inside
Somewhere Inside is the electrifying, never-before-told story of Laura Ling’s capture by the North Koreans in March 2009, and the efforts of her sister, journalist Lisa Ling, to secure Laura’s release by former President Bill Clinton. This riveting true account of the first ever trial of an American citizen in North Korea’s highest court carries readers deep inside the world’s most secretive nation while it poignantly explores the powerful, inspiring bonds of sisterly love.

I picked Somewhere Inside by Laura and Lisa Ling when I was at a bookstore in Texas. I remember the story well from when it was in the news. The book was written by two sisters, both of who are journalists. It was published in 2010.
I love memoirs and usually love books written by journalists. Journalists usually research their books well, and they know how to write a good story.
Overall, I liked this book. I found the story fascinating. There is not a lot written about North Korea, so this is an interesting look at a place we know very little about.
I am glad that I read the book, but I didn’t really like the style of going back and forth between the different viewpoints of the two authors. It didn’t always flow well. I think it might have been better if it has been written in the third person or maybe if a different author wrote their story to make it flow better.
