Book Review of
The Last Checkmate
Lynn's Review
If you loved The Tattooist of Auschwitz, I think you will enjoy The Last Checkmate by Gabriella Saab.
This is a story of a girl and how she survived Auschwitz by using her skill and love of the game of chess.
I have had this one on my to be read list since it came out. When the kindle ebook went on sale I instantly bought it. I have mixed thoughts on this one.
I loved the author’s writing. It drew you in. Overall this is a powerful story, unlike any other WWII historical fiction that I have read. I can see why so many love this book.
However, it was super graphic and detailed. I have read a lot of WWII books and this doesn’t usually bother me, but for some reason I struggled with this one. I think it might be simply that the author’s writing was so good that it felt real.
I also felt like this book was unrealistic at points. Like it really wouldn’t have happened. However, I am glad that I read it and can see why others enjoyed it so much. I would say it is a three star book for me.
