Fiction Friday

If you read and liked the book The Kitchen House, I think you will also like the book Crow Mary by Kathleen Grissom.

Crow Mary book review

This week’s Fiction Friday is a book that you will be thinking about long after you finish it.

Published in 2023, Crow Mary is a historical fiction book written by the best-selling author of The Kitchen House.

Like The Kitchen House, Crow Mary takes you on an epic historical journey.

Crow Mary is based on the true story of Crow Mary. With help from Crow Mary’s great-granddaughter, a Crow elder, and a Crow historian, Kathleen Grissom learned Mary’s story and the story of the Crow Indians.

Kathleen Grissom turned what she learned into a masterfully told story of what life would have been like for the Crow Indians in the 1800s.

In 1872, in Montana, Goes First married Abe Farwell, a white fur trader. Abe gave Goes First the name of Mary, and she became known as Crow Mary.

After they were married, Mary and Abe headed to Abe’s trading post in Saskatchewan, Canada, where Mary started a life that was very different from the one she knew.

As they head back to Montana in 1873, they witness a Massacre where Mary helps rescue five Nakoda women who were held captive.

The book then follows Mary through years of life with many ups and downs.

Kathleen Grissom writes about the clash of cultures in the 1800s so well. You can tell that she did so much research on what life would be like for Native Americans in Montana in the 1800s.

Mary’s story is a love story filled with heartache and tragedy.

This book is not an easy read, but it is well worth it. This is historical fiction, but it is also a reflection of real life. Terrible things happen in real life and in this book.

Just like real life, it doesn’t wrap up in a neat package. Instead, it gives you a true picture of a part of history that more people need to know about.

This book has over seven thousand reviews on Amazon, so a lot of people have read this book, but I still feel like it hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves.

Crow Mary by Kathelen Grissom is not the type of book that social media and the online book world tend to promote.

Crow Mary was not a celebrity book club book, and when it was published, I didn’t see anyone online talking about it. I want to change that.

Crow Mary is an epic story that more people need to read!

If you are looking for a book that you will be thinking about long after you finish it, pick up Crow Mary by Kathleen Grissom.

I think Kathleen Grissom’s books are a lot like Kristin Hannah’s books in the sense that they take you on an emotional ride. I don’t mind those types of books because I like historical fiction books that read like real life, but I know they are not for everyone.

If you enjoy Kristin Hannah’s writing, I think you will enjoy Crow Mary and Kathleen Grissom’s other books. And if you have read Kathleen Grissom, but haven’t read a Kristin Hannah book, you should give Kristin Hannah a try.

I will add a content warning for this book. This book contains some difficult content: abuse, alcoholism, and a massacre.
