The Children’s Blizzard Book Pairing

Have you ever wondered what the real story behind The Children’s Blizzard is? Or have you ever wondered exactly what The Children’s Blizzard is?

The Children's Blizzard fiction and nonfiction books

What is The Children’s Blizzard

The Children’s Blizzard, also known as the Schoolchildren’s Blizzard, was a blizzard that hit the U.S. plains on January 12, 1888. It hit mainly in Nebraska and the southern part of the Dakota territory, killing two hundred and thirty-five people, mainly children heading home from school.

The storm came with no warning, and accounts say that the temperature dropped eighteen degrees in three minutes and went from just above freezing to well below zero in just hours.

I have read two books about the Children’s Blizzard. One was historical fiction and the other was nonfiction. I am sharing a little bit about both books. Both versions are a great way to learn about a lesser known even in American history from the 1800s.

Books like these, where children die, are not easy to read, but I think they are important. We need to learn history, and we need to learn from history. I appreciate hard reads because they are usually the ones where I learn the most.

The Children’s Blizzard Nonfiction Fiction Book Pairing

The Children's Blizzard by Melanie Benjamin

Children’s Blizzard Historical Fiction

Melanie Benjamin’s historical fiction novel The Children’s Blizzard is based on the real-life event.

This is a powerful story of how quickly life can change. Within hours lives were changed forever because of a blizzard. The story focuses on two sisters, both schoolteachers, who made decisions on the day of the storm that changed their lives forever. One becomes a hero, and one holds guilt for lives forever changed.

I love nonfiction, but the reality is that many people will read a historical fiction book before they will read the nonfiction version. I can see why so many people love this historical fiction book.

If you love historical fiction, especially about lesser-known parts of history, this is a good read. I think you will learn a lot about the 1800s in Nebraska and the Dakota Territory.

The Children's Blizzard by David Laskin

The Children’s Blizzard Nonfiction

The Children’s Blizzard by David Laskin is a nonfiction book about the Children’s Blizzard. It is the real story with real facts. The people, places, and events are real.

They are the stories people actually lived through.

That winter of 1888 was a historic winter in history for the Dakota territory and the plains area of the United States.

Thousands of immigrants moved west in hopes of a better life. They were not prepared for the winter that they had to endure.

If you love history and weather, I think you will enjoy this book about this historic winter on the American prairie.

This book will also make you appreciate how much weather technology we have and our ability to send mass warnings about weather events.

If you need a great book pairing for winter, you will learn a lot about a forgotten event with these two books.
