The Ship of Brides

The Ship of Brides by Jojo Moyes is a WWII historical fiction book published in 2005.

This is a backlist book that I had not heard of until a follower recommended it to me when I was looking for historical fiction that was one timeline.

The Ship of Brides is based on the real-life story of Australian women who married British soldiers during WWII and were brought to England on an aircraft carrier after the war.

It follows four very different brides who share a room on a ship headed to England. They have left Australia, their families, and the only life they have known to start a new life with their British husbands whom they hardly know.

I have read many fiction and nonfiction about WWII but knew nothing about the ship of brides.

This is the second book by Jojo Moyes that I have read. I read The Giver of the Stars and didn’t love it, but I decided to try this book anyway. I ended up enjoying it and am glad that I read it. Now I need to read more of Jojo Moyes’s books.

  1. I loved Giver of the Stars. Maybe that’s because I live in Appalachia and can actually remember the traveling librarians. Our traveling librarians had moved on to vans instead of mules. We couldn’t wait until the ladies got to our communities or schools and we could check out books.

  2. I always feel a bit uneasy recommending books to others in case the book should miss the mark. Glad this one hit the target for you.
