Christmas Historical Fiction

This list of Christmas historical fiction combines two of my favorite types of reads, Christmas fiction and historical fiction.

Christmas Historical Fiction

Christmas fiction is historical fiction set at Christmas. It mixes history and Christmas. From WWI and WWII to the Regency Era and the Civil War, this list contains a wide range of time periods.

If you love historical fiction and are looking for a book to read in December, this list is for you.

Historical Fiction Set At Christmastime

Last Christmas In Paris

Last Christmas in Paris by Hazel Gaynor and Heather Webb is a WWI historical fiction novel set during Christmas.

I read this several years ago and loved it. It is one of my all-time favorite Christmas books. I think it might be time for a reread.

Christmas With the Queen book

Christmas with the Queen by Hazel Gaynor and Heather Webb is perfect for fans of all things royal!

Christmas with the Queen is set in England during the Christmas season. It begins in December 1952 and follows Olive, an aspiring BBC reporter, and Jack, a chef who aspires to own his own restaurant but takes a job working in the Royal kitchen.

This is another one of my favorite Christmas books.

An Ivy Hill Christmas

An Ivy Hill Christmas by Julie Klassen was a recent read for me. This is a fun Christmas historical romance set in 19th-century England.

A Quilt for Christmas book

A Christmas Quilt by Sandra Dallas is a book I read years ago and enjoyed. It is set in Kansas during the Civil War at Christmas.

Christmas Bells

Christmas Bells by Jennifer Chiaverini is based on the song “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” This book made me want to know more about the song.

Winter Solstice book review

Winter Solstice by Rosamund Pilcher is not entirely a Christmas book, but it is set during the Christmas and winter seasons. It is set in a Scottish fishing town, and it is one of my favorite winter comfort reads.

The Liberty Scarf book

The Liberty Scarf by Aimie K. Runyan, J’nell Ciesielski, and Rachel McMillan is set during WWI at Christmas. It is like three books in one, all intertwined by a scarf and a war. The book’s ending brings all three stories together.

Christmas at Carnton

Christmas at Carnton by Tamera Alexander is a Christmas book set during the Civil War. I read this book years ago and enjoyed it.

The Baker's Daughter book

The Baker’s Daughter by Sarah McCoy is my current historical fiction read. It is a dual timeline book. The 1945 timeline is set at Christmas, so it is often considered a Christmas historical fiction read. I am not far enough into it to give it a review, but I will share a full review when I am done.

I would love to hear if you have a favorite historical fiction book to read this time of year.

  1. So glad you included Christmas bells by Jennifer Chiaverini. I consider it a classic Christmas story and read every year. I love the way it goes from modern time to telling the story of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I never knew it and it’s just wonderful history. She is one of my top favorite writers.

  2. Had to check my book journal realized I had read Christmas with the Queen. Absolutely Loved.
Also have read Last Christmas in Paris. At first, I was disappointed that it was letters back-and-forth during World War One and then I absolutely fell in love with the book and really enjoyed.

Just starting the Baker’s daughter. Thanks again!
