We are changing things up this week for backlist book picks. Instead of featuring two books, we are just featuring one book. That book is Call the Midwife.
That one book though is the first book in a three book series. That means we are kind of featuring three books in one this week.
Have you seen the PBS show Call the Midwife? If you haven’t seen it, maybe you have at least heard of it.
Did you know that the show is based on a book? It is actually based on a series of three books.
- Call the Midwife: A Memoir of Birth, Joy, and Hard Times
- Call the Midwife: Shadows of the Workhouse
- Call the Midwife: Farewell to the East End
Call the Midwife shares the story of London’s East End Slums following WWII. It is a story of poverty, community, overcoming the challenges of life, serving others even when it is very difficult, and more.
The first book was published back in 2002, so it is definitely a backlist book that a lot of people don’t know about.
I enjoyed watching the first season of Call the Midwife, but I enjoyed the books even more. I have read the first two in the series and hope to read the third one soon.
If you love the show and haven’t read the books, Call the Midwife, I think that you will enjoy them. If you haven’t seen the show but love books set in London, that are a little different than your typical nonfiction books, give these a try!
And if you have read the books or seen the show I would love to hear what you think of them.
