Dual timeline books have been so popular for the last ten or so years, but if you prefer books with one timeline, this list of books is for you.

I love historical fiction. Many of my favorites are dual timeline books, but I have read so many dual timeline books that I am ready for more books with a single chronological timeline.
As I was researching books with a single, linear timeline to read, I realized I had read quite a few books that had one timeline.
I decided that I am probably not the only one who wants to read more of them. I decided books with a single timeline would make a great list for historical fiction fans.
This list of books are all books that I have read, so they are ones that I can truly review and recommend.
Historical Fiction with One Timeline

The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom is set on a southern plantation during the late 1700s. This book deals with what life was like as a slave. It is not an easy book to read, but it is so good. It is one of my favorite historical fiction books with one timeline.

Crow Mary by Kathleen Grissom is set in the late 1800s. It is based on the real life story of Goes First, a Crow Indian who was renamed Crow Mary, who married a white fur trader.
Crow Mary did not get the attention it deserved when it was published in 2023. Most people recognized Kathleen Grissom for The Kitchen House, but Crow Mary is just as good. It is also another hard read, but an important read.

Fire In Beulah by Rilla Askew was published in 2001. This book is about the Tulsa Race Riots, also known as the Tulsa Race Massacre. This book weaves together the story of one white family and one black family who live in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1921.
Rills Askew did an amazing job writing about what Oklahoma was like during the 1920s. If you want to read a book about a piece of history that few people know about, this is a great read.

The Ship of Brides by Jojo Moyes is a backlist book recommended to me by one of my followers. It is set during WWII and is about a group of women from Australia who married British soldiers.
The prologue and last chapter are ahead in time, but the rest of the book is in the same timeline

The Booklovers Library by Madeline Martin is the third Madeline Martin book that I have read, and it is my favorite. It is about books, bookstores, and lending libraries set during WWII.

The Canary Girls by Jennifer Chiaverini is a WWI historical fiction book. It is about the women who worked in the munition factories during the war. This book follows the women as they risk their health and life to help fight the war.

Deep River by Karl Marlantes is set along the Columbia River on the Oregon-Washington border during the early 1900s. This is an epic saga of a Finnish family who make a living logging the forests of the Pacific Northwest.
I loved this book. I grew up near the area where it was set, so I knew a lot of the history in this book, but I also learned a lot. If you know very little about the history of logging in the Pacific Northwest, I think you will learn a lot reading this one.

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah might be my favorite Kristin Hannah book. This book is set in the Alaskan wilderness, where a Vietnam vet moves his family to try to escape his scars and pain.
This book deals with some tough topics and events. It is not an easy read, but that is why I loved it. I have heard people say that Kristin Hannah goes overboard with the emotional ride she takes you on, but I find her writing reads a lot like real life.
Life is difficult and full of tragedy. We may not like to admit it, but many people have lived through horrific experiences as the characters in this book did.

The Kitchen Front by Jennifer Ryan blends food and WWII, two of my favorite things to read about. This book is about a cooking contest between four women who lived in England. What started out as a contest turned them into friends.

The Underground Library by Jennifer Ryan is inspired by real underground libraries in London during WWII. It follows three women, one of whom is a librarian, who live in London during the war.

Dear Mrs. Bird by AJ Pearce is a WWII book that I loved. Emmy wants to be a journalist but ends up taking a job as an advice columnist during the war. The story follows Emmy, her co-workers, and friends as they live their everyday lives during WWII.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris is a book that I read quite a few years ago and still think about. It is about a Slovakian Jew who is put to work as a tattooist, tattooing numbers on prisoners in Auschwitz.

The Tiffany Girls by Shelley Noble is set in 1899 New York. It follows the Tiffany Girls, who worked for Louis Comfort Tiffany, making his Tiffany Glass windows, lamps, and other works. I learned so much about Tiffany Glass from this book.

West With Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge is based on the real story of two giraffes who traveled across the U.S. during the Great Depression. I loved this book. It was so different than other books set during the Great Depression that I have read.
I know this book gets mixed reviews, but if you are looking for something a little different, I think you might enjoy this one.

The Story She Left Behind by Patti Callahan Henry is part historical fiction and part literary mystery. Patti Callahan Henry is an auto-buy author for me. She is one of the few authors whom I will preorder books when new ones are released.
This book is set mainly in England, in 1952, during London’s Great Smog. I loved that this one was set post WWII. There are so many WWII books set in England, so it was a nice change to read a book set shortly after the war and the challenges that came from that time period.
This is set in 1952, with a few memories back to 1927. Since the vast majority of the book is set in 1952, I think it would be considered one timeline.

The Dressmakers of London by Julia Kelly is about two sisters who inherit their mother’s dress shop during WWII. While trying to live with the realities of war, the two sisters must confront their past to save the dress shop they love.

Once Upon a Wardrobe by Patti Callahan is another book set in England. It is a brother and sister who are on a mission to find out where Narnia came from. This is another book bty Patti Callahan Henry that I love.

Come From Away by Genevieve Graham is set in 1939 Novia Scotia. It is about the Canadian coast and German U-boats during WWII. There are a lot of historical fiction books about WWII, but not many set in Canada, so this was a fascinating read.

The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah is another Kristin Hannah book that I loved. A book set during the Great Depression and its difficulties is not an easy read, but I think it is an important one.
I know this book gets mixed reviews, but my husband’s family is from Oklahoma and Texas. His grandparents lived through the Great Depression, and much of this book reads like the stories that I have heard from that time.
Have you read a book with a singular timeline that isn’t on my list? I would love to hear about it in the comments.
Thank you for this list! I love dual (and even tri-) timeline stories but I can’t keep track of them through audio books!
I am glad you enjoyed the list!
