A Mountain of Crumbs by Elena Gorokhova is a memoir of life in Russia. Memoirs are not always easy to read, but I think they are important because they give you a look at a life that can be hard to imagine.
They also often put life into perspective and make you thankful for the things you take for granted. A Mountain of Crumbs gives you a look at Russia from someone who found a way to escape at a time very few did. If you want to know more about growing up in Russia and the extremes people often took to leave this is a good read.
Elena Gorokhova is also the author of A Mountain of Crumbs which I recently read and enjoyed.
