Maria by Michelle Moran was published in 2024. 

This is a novel about Maria and the Sound of Music movie. Did you know that the movie The Sound of Music was not really what the Von Trapp family’s life was like? 

I love The Sound of Music. I have seen it many times, so when I first saw this book, I did not want to read it. I often do not like historical fiction based on a well-known or famous person because so many liberties are usually taken with history. But then I heard The History Mom recommend it, and I knew I wanted to try it.

I ended up really enjoying Maria much more than I expected I would. 

The author’s note said she took some liberties with the story, but there were not many. 

I have had Maria Von Trapp’s autobiography/memoir for years but have never read it. A lot of this book was based on her memoirs, so I really want to read the nonfiction version now that I have read the fiction version of the story. 

If you like The Sound of Music movie as much as I do, I think you will enjoy this book because you will realize how much the movie is different from the real story. I loved how the author combined the real story of Maria with some of the history of The Sound of Music musical.
