This weekend is the beginning of fall. That means cooler temperatures and more rainy weather for much of the Northern Hemisphere. Or at least the northern part of the U.S.
Fall weather always puts me in the mood for cozy books. The kind of books that you like to read wrapped up in a blanket with a cup of tea or coffee. Or a book that you would read by the fire after a long week.
Cozy books to me are like comfort food. Maybe they should be called comfort books. They are the books you turn to when you want easy, fun, comforting, reads.
Because this week marks the beginning of fall, Grace and I wanted to share a few of our favorite fall, or comfort type of reads.
These are all good books no matter what time of year that you read them, but they are especially perfect books for fall reading.
Mitford
This is one of my favorite series. I tell people it is like Anne of Green Gables for grown ups. I think this is cozy reading at it’s best. At Home In Mitford is the first book in the series and it is my favorite. I also did a whole post on Book vs Movie At Home In Mitford that proves just how much I love of the books in this series.
Anne of Green Gables
I almost didn’t included the Anne of Green Gables series because is on just about every must read fall books list. But I had to include it because one of the most famous quotes from the Anne books is all about fall.
” I’m so glad that I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
Fall is my favorite time of years, so I agree with Anne. I am thankful for a world where we have October.
North and South
I love this book! And even though I love Jane Austen, I have recommended this book over Jane Austen to many people. I love reading North and South anytime of year. It is one of the few books that I have read multiple times, but it is set in Northern England, so it is perfect for fall reading.
Wildwood
Wildwood made my list because it is set in Portland, Oregon. If you know anything about Portland, Oregon , than you know it rains a lot. Wildwood is a Narnia type fantasy book for kids, but I actually think it is a better book for adults. It is not the same thing as Narnia, but is definitely a good read for Chronicles of Narnia Fans.
Agatha Christie
A fall book list doesn’t seem complete without an Agatha Christie or two. According to Grace The ABC Murders and The Secret Adversary are both good ones. Can you believe that I have never read an Agatha Christie book? This fall would be a perfect time for me to fix that!
Dear Mr. Knightly
If you haven’t read Dear Mr. Knightly, I highly recommended it. I read it a few years ago and loved it. It is a great book for anytime of year, but it is perfect for fall. It is all about books, reading, college, and learning about who we really are. I am not a big rereader, but this is a book I could easily read over again.
Where Did You Go Bernadette
Where Did You Go Bernadette came out quite a few years ago and was very popular. I finally got to reading it a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Because it takes place in Seattle, a very rainy place, it makes a great read for fall.
Girl Waits with Gun
I am not sure what about this book says fall to us, but when Grace and I were working on this list of fall books, both of us thought of Girl Waits with Gun. We both loved this book and enjoyed the two sequels as well.
Charles Lenox Mystery Series
The Charles Lenox Mystery Series by Charles Finch is my favorite Mystery series. I love it. Over the last few years, I have read the entire series. I love the series, but tend to read them only during the fall and winter. They are set in England, so the weather is often rainy and cold in the books, making it perfect fall and winter reading.
Lady Hardcastle Mysteries
The Lady Hardcastle Mystery series is another mystery series that I love. It is also another series that takes place in England, so the weather is often rainy and fall like. Again perfect reading for cool and rainy fall weather.
Lord of the Rings
Lord of the Rings is another classic series that is great for reading on a cold rainy fall day. If you haven’t read it, now would be a great time to read it.
Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
There is just something about books set in England that make me think of fall. I know the weather is not always cold and rainy in England, but I think it is a lot like the Pacific Northwest. It rains enough of the time, that people just associate it with cold rainy weather.
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society book has been out for quite a while, but I just got around to reading it this year. I loved it. It is another great book for reading on a cold fall evening or weekend. I also did a whole post on the book vs the movie Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
