Latest Book Reivews

I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving, and that it included at least a little time for reading. Our Thanksgiving was pretty quiet.

Our family is all on the West Coast, so we had a small Thanksgiving. It was quiet and slow, which was actually kind of nice because it allowed time for Christmas decorating and reading!

If you are reading this site, it means that you love books and reading as much as we do. Did you know that Amazon currently has a book coupon? It is $5 off a $20 book purchases. Click here for the details and the code. I used it yesterday to get a couple of Christmas gifts. Amazon only offers this code once or twice a year, so if you have a few books on your wish list or gift list, it is the perfect time to get them.

Because we had a pretty quiet weekend, we were able to get quite a few new book reviews up. If you need book gift ideas, there are quite a few books on the list that would make great gifts.

When the Men Were Gone

When the Men Were Gone- This book would make a great gift for a football fan, a football mom, or someone that is from or lives in Texas. This is not a true story, but it is based on one. It is about Texas and football during WWII. I loved this one and have already recommended it to friends.

Fire Road

Fire Road– This was a tough but important read. This would make a great gift for someone that enjoys Christian biographies or that wants to learn more about the Vietnam War.

I Will Not Fear

I Will Not Fear-This was a interesting read. I enjoyed reading the view from someone that actually lived it.

Last Christmas In Paris

Last Christmas In Paris– This is the perfect time of year to read this one.

The Bridge by Karen Kingsbury

The Bridge– This is another one that is a great book for this time of year. It would also be a good gift for someone that loves Karen Kingsbury.

Endurance

Endurance Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage-I consider this required reading for my kids. It is a story of leadership, hardship, and endurance during the most difficult circumstances. This is a great book to give someone that loves biographies, history, or adventures stories. It is nonfiction, but the writing is so well done it reads like fiction. This is a book I could read every couple of years.

If you enjoy Hallmark Christmas movies, be sure to check out our list of books that read like a Hallmark Christmas movie.

We are planning some new fun projects that we can’t wait to share. I hope you have a great rest of your weekend!

  1. Hi, Lynn. I have a 13 yr. old grandson that I’m searching out a book for a Christmas gift. “Endurance” sounds like a good candidate. What do you think?

    • I think that depends on the 13 yr old. I definitely think it is a great book for teens or young adults because there is so much in it about leadership during extreme circumstances. The voyage did not go as planned though. It was full of disasters and it goes into detail about that. If your grandson reads nonfiction and war type of stories I think it would be fine and he would enjoy it. If he is sensitive to that kind of stuff he might need to be a bit older. My 16 year old read it last year for school and did a report on it. He enjoyed it. I had wanted him to read it before that, but he waited. I would have been fine with my son reading it at 13, but we read a lot of history and nonfiction so he is used to those type of books. I hope that helped answer your question. You might find a post we did awhile ago on books for boys helpful too. Some of them are for younger boys, but many could be read by the 12-16 age range. The book Hatchet that is on the list is one of my son’s favorite books. If your grandson hasn’t read that one, it might be a good choice too. I hope that helps! https://fromourbookshelf.com/book-for-boys/
