All About Allergies by Zachary Rubin

If you or someone you know suffers from allergies, All About Allergies by Zachary Rubin is a book you may find helpful.

All About Allergies by Zachary Rubin MD

The subtitle of All About Allergies is “Everything You Need To Know About Asthma, Food Allergies, Hay Fever, and More.”

That is exactly what this book is about. It is all about Allergies. The science behind them, the medication that helps make life with allergies and asthma easier, the doctors who treat people with allergies, and so much more.

Dr. Zachary Rubin is a board-certified pediatrician, allergist, and immunologist. He is a practicing doctor, but he is also on TikTok and Instagram, sharing his tips, advice, and medical facts.

I don’t follow him on Instagram, and I am not on TikTok, but I know who he is from seeing his Instagram reels in my feed.

I don’t read many books by influencers because I think they are often overhyped. Many influencers and bloggers get book deals simply because they have large followings, not because they are great writers or have valuable information to share.

However, when I saw that Dr. Zachary Rubin had a book about allergies and asthma, I decided to take a risk and buy it because I have suffered from allergies and asthma since I was a young kid. I also have three kids with asthma, and my two daughters have severe allergies.

It seemed like it was a book worth giving a try.

I ended up loving this book! Yes, I loved a book about allergies and asthma. I found this book so helpful that I bought a copy for one of my sisters to read.

I have suffered from asthma and allergies since I was a young child. I remember going to my first asthma doctor and being so thankful for the medication he prescribed me that helped my breathing.

I also remember suffering through allergy testing both as a kid and as an adult. I say suffering because I have had such bad reactions that I was almost rushed to the hospital for a reaction during allergy testing. That happened multiple times. I have said I will never have allergy testing again.

Both my daughters also have anaphylactic food allergies, which I have talked about quite a bit on my food website, Lynn’s Kitchen Adventures.

The reality is that our family has crazy allergies, some of which are rare allergies.

From my sisters and their kids to my kids and me. The gene for allergy and asthma is strong in my family.

For a while, the clinic our allergist is at knew us as that family. I was explaining something to a nurse one time, and she said, “Oh, yeah, you are that family.”

In a large allergy clinic with quite a few doctors and a ton of patients, you don’t want to be the family with such weird allergy issues that they know you as “that family.”

Since I have dealt with allergies for years, I know a lot about allergies, but I still learned quite a bit from this book.

More than that, this book helped me feel less alone.

Chronic health issues like severe allergies and asthma can be lonely. Often, it feels like you are the only one, but Dr. Rubin helped remind me that we are not the only ones with crazy, sometimes rare allergies.

Last year, I had a rare and severe reaction to NSAIDs. I can no longer take any medication that contains or is related to Ibuprofen.

It is a reaction that occurs in only a small percentage of asthmatics. You have to have asthma to have the reaction.

I have had three doctors tell me that I am the only patient they have seen with this reaction. They knew this reaction was possible and had studied it in medical school, but for all three doctors, I was their first patient to ever experience this reaction to NSAIDs.

When it comes to allergies and asthma, we really are that family.

So I was both surprised and happy when, on page 83 of All About Allergies, Dr. Rubin discusses this reaction to NSAIDs. He helped me understand my reaction and helped me feel like someone else understood.

The first few chapters of the book are technical, with a lot of medical science on the history of allergies and how the immune system works, but overall, I thought Dr. Rubin did a great job of bringing it down to a level the average person can understand.

The technical first couple of chapters are important, so don’t skip them. Once you get past the first couple of chapters, that book is less technical and easier to read.

In All About Allergies, Dr. Rubin covers what it is like to go to the allergist. He talks about allergy testing and how it works.

He covers food allergies, eczema, dermatitis, anaphylaxis, medication, mast cell disorders, and more.

He concludes the book with treatment options, including medication and immunotherapy. He also talked about the future of allergy medications, which made me hopeful for those of us with severe allergies and asthma.

Yes, I knew a lot of what was in the book, but I also learned a lot. More than that, I felt like Dr. Rubin and others understand what it is like to live with severe allergies and asthma.

I think this book is great for those new to the allergy world, as well as for those like me who are very familiar with allergies.

If you have recently been diagnosed with allergies or have a child who has, I think you will find a lot of helpful information in All About Allergies. It will help you understand what is happening and how it can be better treated.

If you are like me and very familiar with the world of allergies, I think you will also learn some things from this book. If nothing else, I think it will help you know that so many others understand.

Have you read All About Allergies by Zachary Rubin, MD? I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

  1. Thanks for the review. I’ve had this one on my TBR. Are we secret twins or something? Ha! Not only do we like the same kinds of books, we have so many other things in common. My kids and I also have asthma and anaphylactic food allergies. My anaphylaxis developed as an adult, and I also have several dozen food sensitivities. For about 5 years now I’ve been following the AIP diet (auto-immune protocol) and it’s made a big difference in enabling my immune system to work better and grow stronger. I appreciate health related books. Recently I finished Glucose Revolution and am currently reading When the Body Says No. Both are really interesting and have useful information. I’ll have to read All About Allergies sooner rather than later.
