Mitford Cookbook and Kitchen Reader

Fans of The Mitford series will love the Mitford Cookbook by Jan Karon!

We are changing things up, and I am sharing a literary cookbook that I love.

Are you familiar with literary cookbooks? They mix books and food.

When my kids were little, I loved to get cookbooks based on their favorite books. We had a Little House on the Prairie Cookbook. We also had a Redwall Cookbook and an American Doll Cookbook. My kids had so much fun cooking out of them.

A lot of the cookbooks based on books are for kids’ books, but there are also some based on adult books. Jan Karon’s Mitford Cookbook and Kitchen Reader is an example of a cookbook based on a book series that adults love.

If you are not familiar with the Mitford series by Jan Karon, they are a series of books set in the small, fictional town of Mitford, North Carolina. The series follows Father Tim and the people of Mitford.

I love the series. When I describe them to people, I usually say that they are a comfort read, like Anne of Green Gables for adults.

My love of Mitford runs deep.

Several years ago, I put together a list of all the Mitford books by Jan Karon in order.

I have shared what to read after the Mitford series, where I shared a whole list of books that read similarly to the Mitford books.

Hopefully one day I will be able to visit the Mitford Museum.

As you can tell, I love Jan Karon’s Mitford books. It is probably no surprise that when I recently discovered that there was a Mitford cookbook, I had to buy it.

I can’t believe I did not know about this cookbook. Jan Karon’s Mitford Cookbook and Kitchen Reader was published in 2004. It was published over twenty years ago.

Throughout the book, there are excerpts and information about the books and recipes that are fun to read.

I love how this cookbook is set up.

The recipes in the cookbook are organized by book.

There are over thirty recipes from the first book, At Home in Mitford.

Nineteen recipes are shared from A Light in the Window.

Ten recipes from A Common Life.

And so many more recipes from other books.

The recipes are from dishes that Emma, Puny, Father Tim, Cynthia, and so many others from Mitford made in the books.

The Mitford Cookbook by Jan Karon is so fun to look through. You don’t have to cook anything from this cookbook to enjoy it. If you are a fan of the Mitford books, I think you will enjoy this.

I think it would also make a great gift for anyone who loves the Mitford books.

So far, I have made two recipes from the book.

I made Puny’s Macaroni and Cheese recipe that was from the book In This Mountain. It was so good! I shared the recipe and talked a little bit about the book over on Lynn’s Kitchen Adventures.

I also made Puny’s Lemon Pie, which Puny serves in At Home In Mitford. It was delicious!

The first Mitford book was published in 1994, so the recipes have a bit of a 1990s feel, but I think that is part of what makes them fun.
