The Family Romanov
The Family Romanov by Candace Fleming was published in 2014.
Tsar Nicholas II of Russia was the wealthiest monarch in the world. He ruled over 130 million people and one-sixth of the earth’s land surface. But he turned a blind eye to the abject poverty of his subjects.
Empress Alexandra was stern and shy. She was also deeply religious and obsessed with the mystic Rasputin.
Their daughters were the Grand Duchess Olga, Tatiana, Marie, and Anastasia. They were isolated and immature girls
Tsarevich Alexei, the youngest of the Romanovs, heir to the throne, was their only son. He was a hemophiliac whose debilitating illness was kept secret from the rest of the world.
Lynn's Review
The Family Romanov by Candace Fleming is a YA biography that was published in 2014.
This YA biography is about the Romanov Family and the last Tsar of Russia.
I have a goal to read more YA books this year. Since I love history and biographies, I decided to read The Family Romanov by Candance Flemining.
This book covers the Russian History of Tsar Nicholas II and his wife Alexandria, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, from 1881 to 1918.
Tsar Nicholas ruled over 130 million people and was the wealthiest monarch in the world. However, he ignored the poverty and misery of the people he ruled over.
His wife followed the mystic Rasputin and convinced her husband to do things that were not in the interest of the people he ruled.
They had four daughters and a son. Their son, who was heir to the throne, was a hemophiliac.
This book is the story of the family, the starving people they ruled, the beginnings of WWI, the fall and murder of the Tsar’s family, and the rise of Lenin to power.
I have read some books about Russia, but most were set during WWII or the Cold War, so I found The Family Romanov very interesting. This book actually gave me the desire to learn more about Russian history, especially the late 1800s to WWII.
This is a YA book, so it is a fairly surface view of Romanov history. It is written to make history interesting for YA readers. I think a lot of this book is taken from other books and is just rewritten for a YA audience.
I think The Family Romanov would be good for YA readers, and also for someone who as not read a lot about Russia during the early 1900s.
