September 2023 was a great reading month for me! For a not so great reason…
I spent the first three weeks of September sick. For the first two weeks I was really sick. The third week I was better, but not all the way better.
I read thirteen books in September, which might be a record reading month for me.
It was also a month of reading memoirs. Four of the thirteen books were memoirs. I love memoirs, but I don’t usually read four in one month. And I have lots of thoughts on the memoirs that I read in September.
September Reading
Fiction
Crow Mary by Kathleen Grissom. This book has not received the attention that it deserves. If you loved The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom, I think you will enjoy her latest book based on the true story of Goes First a Crow Indian.
The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams. I have mixed thoughts on this one. I liked it but didn’t love it.
West With Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge. I loved this book. It was the right book at the right time. This is based on the true story of two giraffes who traveled cross country during The Great Depression.
Murder At the Elms by Alyssa Maxwell. This is the latest book in one of my favorite mystery series. I enjoyed it.
A Royal Christmas by Melody Carlson. Yes, I read a Christmas book in September. I read it so I could review it for a project I am working on for the holidays.
A Match In the Making by Jen Turano. This is another book I read while not feeling well. it was a fun clean romance set in the Gilded Age.
The Cruelest Month by Louise Penny. This was not my favorite Louise Penny book. Louise Penny is a brilliant mystery writer though so I will keep reading the series.
Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie. I think this is my favorite Agatha Christie book that I have read. I listened to it on audio and enjoyed the narrator.
Nonfiction
Jump by Larry Miller. I enjoyed this memoir. I think that is mainly because the second half of the book is set in NW Oregon, an area that I am very familiar with.
Counting the Cost by Jill Duggar. This is Jill Duggar’s memoir. It is very different from her sister’s memoir, but I still really enjoyed it.
Christian Nonfiction
All My Knotted Up Life by Beth Moore. I am glad I read this book. I plan to do a full review for Sunday Reading soon, but I am still formulating my thoughts on this book.
Like a River Granger Smith. This was an impulse buy when I saw it at the bookstore and I am so glad that I bought it.
Heaven Rules by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth. Nancy wrote this during Covid and after her husband was diagnosed with two types of cancer. It is a reminder to focus on Heaven. I enjoyed it, but it was a slower read for me because I took time to focus on what I was reading.
I don’t comment often, but appreciate your reviews so much! I just placed 4 holds. 🙂
Wow, several of these have my attention now! Good book month for sure!
I have Crow Mary on my TBR! I always enjoy reading your reviews, Lynn!
I hope that you enjoy Crow Mary! It deals with tough topics, but it is really good.
Thank you
