My reading in April finally feels like normal again. It only took two years.
My reading life has actually been great the last two years, but it hasn’t been normal.
Before 2020 my reading was at least sixty percent nonfiction, probably closer to seventy-five percent.
Over the last two years, it has been close to fifty percent nonfiction and fifty percent fiction. Some months it was almost all fiction.
There is nothing wrong with fiction, I love a great fiction read. Fiction reads are usually quicker, easier reads so when life is overwhelming or crazy, I tend to turn to fiction.
But my favorite books are usually nonfiction. I almost always prefer to read the real version of the story over a fictitious one.
When I looked at my April reads I realized that it is the first month in a long time that I have only completed one fiction book. The rest of the books were nonfiction. And I love that. It feels like I am finding my normal reading life again.
Seasons come and go. I am sure that I will always have some months or years where my reading changes, that is part of life. But I am so glad that my love of nonfiction has come back again.
Has your reading life changed over the last two years? Has it gotten back to normal yet?
April Reads
The Happiest Man On Earth
My family got me The Happiest Man On Earth last year as a gift. I finally picked it up to read. I am so glad I read Eddie Jaku story of surviving Auschwitz and life before and after. Full review here.
The Feather Thief
Multiple readers, that know I love nonfiction, have told me that I needed to read The Feather Thief. I finally read it when it came one month for my Page 1 book subscription. You can read my full review here, but I will say that I loved it. I have now recommended it to quite a few people.
The Diamond Eye
The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn was the one fiction book that I finished in April. I have several Kate Quinn books in my to be read stack, but this is the first book by her that I have read. It won’t be the last. I loved this one. Be sure to read my full review because you might want the content warning on this one.
The Beauty of Dusk
I received The Beauty of Dusk as part of my Shelf Subscription from The Bookshelf Thomasville. I shared my mixed thoughts on this one in my full review.
The Characters of Easter
I finished the Characters of Easter on April first just in time to share it for my Sunday Reading post right before Easter. I really enjoyed this one. If you like thought provoking Christain books you might enjoy this one. I shared a full review in my Sunday Reading post.
Mother Trucker
I almost didn’t finish Mother Trucker by Amy Butcher. I already shared my thoughts on this one here, but the short version is that I struggled to even finish it.
Home Work
I listened to Home Work by Julie Andrews and overall enjoyed it. I did have a few mixed thoughts about it being a little too long and detailed in parts, but if you love books about Hollywood you will probably enjoy this one. You can read my full review here.
