This week, we are talking about The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher for Fiction Friday!

This week’s Fiction Friday features a book published in 1987. It is a book by an author that many women read and loved in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
It is The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher.
If you are a longtime reader, then you may know of my love of Rosamund Pilcher. I have mentioned her many times.
Her books are comfort reads for me. I love her writing. She does a fantastic job describing the people, weather, and places in her books.
I can see why The Shell Seekers has stood the test of time. Thirty-five years later, and this is still a book that people read and love.
The Shell Seekers alternates between the 1980s and WWII.

It follows Penelope, whose prize possession is a painting by her father called The Shell Seekers. When her children find out the painting is worth a fortune, they all have plans for what should be done with it.
The book follows Penelope and her family through the years. You learn the history of the painting and of Penelope’s family.
One of the things that I love about Rosamunde Pilcher’s books is that she writes about real life in a relatable way.
She writes about life and death. She writes about the joys and challenges of marriage. She writes about the good and the hard things of life.
The Shell Seekers is over six hundred pages long, which is why I think a lot of people are hesitant to pick it up, but the length of the book is part of what makes it so good.

I love reading shorter books that I can read quickly, but shorter books can’t go into as many details. It is harder to follow a person or a family over generations in three hundred pages, but in a five or six-hundred-page book, you can.
I loved getting to know Penelope’s family so well in The Shell Seekers. It was worth reading all 600-plus pages.
If you are looking for a summer read that you can sink into and enjoy, give The Shell Seekers a try. Since it is a backlist book that is very popular, you should be able to find it at your library.
