Nonfiction Books About the White House

This list of nonfiction books about the White House is perfect for nonfiction readers that want to learn more about The White House and the people that live and work there.

The White House

It is no secret that we love to read nonfiction, especially nonfiction history. Books about U.S. Presidents and their families are some of our favorites to read about.

Both of my daughters have a goal to read a nonfiction book about each president. They know this goal will probably take years, but it is a fun challenge.

So far on our site, we have put together a list of Presidential biographies and a list of books about the families of U.S. Presidents.

Today we are sharing a list of books about The White House. These are not exactly books about the building known as The White House, but about the people that have lived and worked there.

Since presidents and their families live in The White House, these books share both the stories of The White House and the people that have spent part of their life there.

As always this list only includes books that our family has read. Or in some cases listened to on audio.

Books About The White House

The Residence

The Residence by Kate Anderson Brower. Published in 2016. If you love presidential history but are looking for something on the lighter, easier side, this book is great. The stories range from President Kennedy to President Obama.

First Women

First Women by Kate Anderson Brower. Published in 2017. Several people in my family have read this book about the wives of U.S. Presidents from President Kennedy to Michele Obama. I am currently listening to this on audio and am enjoying it.

Upstairs At the White House by J.B. West. Published in 1973 this book is a fascinating look at not only the First Ladies but about how The White House works.

In the Presidents Secret Service

In the Presidents Secret Service by Ronald Kessler. Published in 2009. My husband and oldest daughter have both listened to this on audio and really enjoyed it.

Within Arms Length book

Within Arms Length by Dan Emmett. Published in 2015. This is one my daughter read and really enjoyed. It is about the secret service, so it is about not only several U.S. Presidents but about the men who protected them and the lengths they go to do that. Because it includes so much about the lives of U.S. Presidents it also includes information about The White House.
