Christian Historical Fiction

If you love clean historical fiction, this list of Christian historical fiction is for you.

Christian Historical Fiction Books

I love to read historical fiction. It is my favorite genre of fiction.

I read all kinds of historical fiction, including Christian historical fiction. We can learn a great deal about history by reading historical fiction.

If you like historical fiction that does not contain a lot of graphic details, this list of Christian historical fiction is for you.

The books on this list are all considered Christian historical fiction because they are published by Christian publishers, but most are books that everyone can enjoy.

Most of them have very few Christian or religious references. They are not preachy. What they do have, though, are inspiring, uplifting stories of hope.

The French Kitchen

The French Kitchen by Kristy Cambron. This book combines World War II, food, spies, and mystery. This was a recent read that I really enjoyed.

This book is labeled as Christian historical fiction and is published by a Christian publisher, but it didn’t feel like a Christian book to me. Like others on this list, I would consider it more of a clean historical fiction book.

These Tangled Threads

These Tangled Threads by Sarah Loudin Thomas. This book is set during the 1920s. It follows three people whose lives revolve around Biltmore and Biltmore Village. I love to read books about or set at Biltmore. I have never been to Biltmore, but it is on my list of places to visit.

Heart of the Glen book

Heart of the Glen by Jennifer Deibel. I loved that this was set in early 1900s Ireland. I learned a lot about weaving and farming in Ireland by reading this book. It was a bit too predictable for me, but I am still glad that I read it.

Where Trees Touch the Sky

When Trees Touch the Sky by Karen Barnett. This is set in the California Redwoods, the 1920s, and 1972.

I love Karen Barnett’s writing. Her National Park books are so much fun. I always learn a lot from her books. She is a former park ranger, so she knows what she is writing about. You will find several of her books on this list.

Until the Leaves Fall In Paris book review

Until the Leaves Fall in Paris by Sarah Sundin. Sarah Sundin is one of my go-to authors when I want a clean WWII historical fiction book. I love all kinds of World War II historical fiction, but after I read a heavy WWII book or one with a lot of war violence, I often turn to an author like Sarah Sundin for a lighter WWII read.

Until the Leaves Fall in Paris is set in World War II Paris.

midnight on the Scottish Shore

Midnight On the Scottish Shore by Sarah Sundin. This is Sarah Sundin’s 2025 release. This was a recent read for me, and I loved the WWII Scotland setting. I have read a lot of WWII historical fiction, but I think this is my first set in Scotland.

The Master Craftsman Book Review

The Master Craftsman by Kelli Stuart. I think this is the first book about Russia and the Romanovs that I have read. I enjoyed this because I learned so much about Russia and Faberge Eggs. If you are looking for a Christian historical fiction book that is a little different, this is a good one.

When Stone Wings Fly book

When Stones Wings Fly by Karen Barnett. This is another Karen Barnett book that I loved. This one is set in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Every Faithful by Karen Barnett

Ever Faithful by Karen Barnett. This Karen Barnett book is set in Yellowstone National Park. This was one of the first Karen Barnett books that I read.

The Women of Oakridge Book

The Women of Oakridge by Michelle Shocklee. This is my current historical fiction read, and I am really enjoying it. It is the first book by Michelle Shocklee that I have read, and I can’t wait to read more.

The Women of Oakridge is a WWII book set in Tennessee. It follows women who took government jobs and ended up working on the Manhattan Project. It is a dual timeline book set in 1944 and 1979. It is about secrets and forgiveness, especially during wartime.

All She Left Behind

All She Left Behind by Jane Kirkpatrick. This book is set in the 1870s on the Oregon frontier. I grew up in Oregon, but there were facts about Oregon’s history that I didn’t know.

A Cup of Dust

A Cup of Dust by Susie Finkbeiner. This book is about the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma in 1935. Gracelyn read this book several years ago. Susie Finkbeiner is an author that I have been meaning to read, but haven’t. I have several of her books on my to-read list and really need to move this one to the top of my list.

Across the Crying Sands by Jane Kirkpatrick

Across the Crying Sands by Jane Kirkpatrick. This book is set in Oregon, not far from where I grew up. It is set in the mid 1800s on the Oregon Coast between Astoria and Tillamook. It is based on the real-life story of the first female mail carrier to deliver mail on the rugged and remote Northern Oregon Coast.

If you have visited the northern Oregon Coast, I think you might enjoy this one.

Once Upon a Wardrobe

Once Upon a Wardrobe by Patti Callahan. This book is set in 1950, when a brother and sister are fascinated by Narnia and C.S. Lewis.

This is a book published by Thomas Nelson, a Christian publisher, but most people don’t consider it a Christian book, and Patti Callahan is not a Christian author.

While the City Sleeps book

While the City Sleeps by Elizabeth Camden. This book is set in 1913, during the Gilded Age in New York. I almost didn’t put this book on the list, but I know a lot of people loved this book. It has a lot of good reviews on Amazon. So, I think I am in the minority on this book.

Overall, I liked the book’s writing. I have read other Elizabeth Camden books and enjoyed them. This book features a dentist as one of the main characters, but Elizabeth Camden did not research dentistry or its history in 1913 very thoroughly. There were a couple of significant historical errors regarding dentistry that I could not get past.

I think if you are not familiar with the dental world, you will enjoy this one more than I did.

Not By Sight

Not By Sight by Kate Breslin. I read this WWI Christian historical fiction book several years ago and enjoyed it. There are many WWII books, but fewer about WWI. If you are looking for a clean WWI book, you might enjoy this one.

Christian Historical Fiction On My To Be Read List

Last Light Over Galveston by Jennifer L. Wright. 1900 Galveston, Texas.

Harbor Secrets by Melody Carlson. 1916 Oregon Coast.

  1. I love this list! There’s a lot I haven’t read. One that I thought was really good is If I Were You by Lynn Austin. I definitely recommned it, if you haven’t read it. I really enjoyed the sequel, too.
